Most of London's big departure stores and rich shops are in the West End. One of the most popular shopping centers in the West End is Oxford Street. Its nice shops and department stores attract not only English people but people from all over the world. It’s always crowded with people, especially at sale time, in January and July.
One of the largest department stores in Oxford Street is Selfridges. It has a lot of departments: Men’s and Women’s Wear, Children’s Clothes, Bedding, Stationery, Electrical goods, household goods and many others.
Selfridges is a very expensive department store that is why most Londoners prefer to go to cheaper shops: Marks and Spencer for clothes and supermarkets for food.
Marks & Spencer is a self-service chain store. M&S, the British food and clothes company, is Britain’s favorite shop and the famous British shop on the world. It attracts a lot of customers, from housewives to millionaires.
It started more than 100 years ago, when Michael Marks, a young immigrant, opened a stall in the market. He had a few things to sell, but above his stall he put the now famous notice: Don’t ask how much – it’s a penny.
Ten years later he met Tom Spencer and together they started Penny Stalls in many British towns.
Today there are more than 640 branches of M&S all over the world, and more and more people are buying their clothes and food from the shop.
There are a lot of Supermarkets and hypermarkets in London. Supermarkets, many of which are chain stores, sell not only food but household goods too.
Hypermarkets have become especially popular with shoppers recently. They are very big supermarkets with parking lots for customers, who come shopping in their cars and buy food for the whole week.
I have never been in London, but I want go there and see its hypermarkets, M&S, shops and etc.

Great Britain is situated on the British Isles. It consists of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and is one thirtieth the size of Europe. Great Britain is surrounded by seas on all sides and is separated from the continent by the North Sea and the English Channel.
There are many rivers in Britain. They are not long but some of them are deep. The longest river is the Severn. There are many mountains in the north of England and in Scotland but they are not very high. The highest mountain in Great Britain is Ben Nevis. There are many lakes in Scotland. The most beautiful is Loch Lomond.
Great Britain has a very good position as it lies on the crossways of the sea routes from Europe to the other parts of the world. There are many countries which are connected with Great Britain by sea. Thanks to Gulf Stream the climate of Great Britain is mild. It is often foggy and rainy. The summer is not very hot and the winter is not very cold.
Great Britain is a highly developed industrial country. It lives by manufacture and trade. Its agriculture provides only half the food it needs, the other half of its food has to be imported. Britain is one of the most highly industrialised countries in the world: for every person employed in agriculture, eleven are employed in mining, manufacturing and building. The main branches of British economy are engineering, mining, ship-building, motor vehicle manufacturing, textile, chemistry, electronics, fishing and food processing. The industrial centres of Great Britain are London, Manchester, Eirmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield and others.
Among all presidents in the history of the United States, Abraham Lincoln is probably the one that Americans remember best. He brought honesty and integrity to the White House. Most of all he is remembered or he is associated with the final abolition of slavery. Lincoln became a virtual symbol of the American Dream whereby an ordinary person from humble beginnings could reach the pinnacle of society as president of the country.Abraham was born on February 12,1809 in Kentucky, and spent the first seven years of his life there. Occasionally he and his sister Sarah attended classes in a log schoolhouse some 3 km from home.It was difficult time for the family, in which his father Thomas Lincoln tried to make living as a carpenter and farmer. The Lincolns moved from farm to farm around Kentucky until 1816, when the family left to settle in Indiana.During 14 years the Lincolns lived in Indiana and his childhood in the frontier of Indiana set the course for his character and motivation in life later.Abraham Lincoln began a long road to become the sixteenth president of the USA, In 1834, he was elected into the House of Representatives and began studying to become a lawyer. For the next few years, he practiced law all across the state. In 1847, he was elected into Congress, but his opinions did not ensure him a long stay there. He was vehemently against slavery. As a result, he was not elected for the second term.A few years later, slavery became a stronger issue, and more people wanted to abolish it. Lincoln joined Republicans, a new political party that opposed slavery. The Republicans nominated him for the US Senate in 1858. Abraham Lincoln's oratorical powers brought him to the attention of the nation. In 1860, he was nominated by the Republican Party as its candidate for the Presidency of the United States. Lincoln won by a small margin..But with his election, the country began the process of dividing. South Carolina had seceded from the Union before he was even inaugurated. Other states followed to form the Confederation. The North and the South were divided, and the Civil War began. The war was not only over the abolition of slavery, but also for the rights of individual states to make their own choices Later, Lincoln was elected for the second term of Presidency in 1864. The South surrendered, and the Civil War was ended on April 9, 1865. The difficult period of time began, the time for reconstruction and reconciliation, but Lincoln would not be the person to lead the country through this difficult period.
On April 14, Abraham Lincoln with his wife attended the play in Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. A few minutes past ten o'clock, an actor stepped into the Presidential box and shot the President. In the following morning Abraham Lincoln died.
8My favorite tv channel and radio station
I think it is impossible to imagine our life without radio and TV. Radio and TV are widely used in today’s world. It is the quickest means of spreading news and the information. Radio plays an important role in reflecting the life of society and building opinions. It performs the service of information well enough but on TV everything is much more real. Radio and TV keep us informed about current events, extend the education, provide the cultural recreation, allow us to follow the latest developments in science and politics and offer an endless number of programmers which are both instructive and entertaining. So they give us a lot of useful information and are exciting.
When I come home from school I turn on the radio, leave it on and go about my household duties. So I am actually doing two things at one and the same time. The best radio station for me is Europa Plus and Radio Maximum. I watch TV at the evening when all the lessons I have done. I prefer to see news programs such as: ”Vesty” and ” The Time”. Sometimes we can watch rather interesting films at TV. There are different kinds of films, for instance: a nature film, a war film, a crime film, a travelogue, an adventure film, a musical film and comic film. As for me I prefer to see comic and crime films.
My favorite channel is the “6th channel”. There are many interesting programs for me like “The wold of computer”, “Farcop”, “News” “Show-Business” and others. I like this program because there are not so many advertisement. Also every weekend there are three films which are popular all over the world. So the “6th Channel” program is my favorite one because it satisfy my different interests in the best way. As for me my favourit radio station is “Europa plus”. It broadcasts many programs , for instance: “Press-Digest”, “Prezent”, “Garage”, “News” and others. Also there are a lot of programs where everyone can win something. It satisfies my interests in the best way. Sometimes when I came home from school I turn on the radio and leave it on and go about my household duties. So the best radio for me is “Europa Plus” and I like to listen to it.
That’s why I think that we can’t live without TV and radio nowadays.
9 My last visit to the doctor
As for me, I was ill, let me remember, maybe five years ago, I kept my bed for a week, but no doctor was called. And my last visit to a doctor I can't remember, so let me tell you about my friend.
One day I came to him and saw him look very bad. I advised him to go to see a doctor. My friend said that he hadn't been feeling well for some time. He had lost his appetite and he didn't sleep very well. He had rather a bad cough that he couldn't get rid of, and a pain in his chest sometimes when he breathes.
Doctor advised my friend to have a thorough examination. The doctor saw his tongue and said that his stomach is a little out of order, then the checked his pulse, it was all right. Then the doctor asked my friend to unfasten his coat and shirt and listened to his heart and chest. Doctor asked the friend if he smoked a lot. My friend answered that he did. The doctor advised him to cut down the smoking for some time.
Then the doctor said that there was nothing serious the matter with my friend, but he was rather run down and needed rest. The doctor gave him a bottle of medicine that would help, advised him to eat plenty of good food, have no cigarettes, and drink plenty of milk. To have plenty of fresh air, of sleep, to change a surrounding.
The holiday worked wonders, and soon my friend was as fit as a fiddle.
I've got a cold. I can't stop sneezing and my nose is runny.
I've got flu. I've got a temperature, my whole body aches, and I feel awful.
I've twisted my ankle. It hurts when I walk on it.
I've got diarrhea. I keep going to the toilet.
I've got a sore throat. My glands are swollen, and it hurts when I swallow.
I've got food poisoning. I keep be sick, and I've got diarrhea.
I didn't feel very well.
I phoned the doctors surgery and made an appointment.
I went to the surgery and saw the doctor.
I explained what was wrong.
She took my temperature and examined me.
She told me I had an infection.
She gave me a prescription.
I went to the chemists, paid the prescription and got some antibiotics.
After a few days I started to feel better.
Television now plays an important role in our life. It is difficult to say if it is good or bad for us. It is clear, that television has advantages and disadvantages.
But are there more advantages than disadvantages? In the first place, television is an entertainment. But it is not only a convenient entertainment. For a family of three, four or five, for example, it is more convenient and less expensive to sit comfortably at home than to go out to find entertainment in other places. They don't have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre or cinema. They turn on the TV-set and can see interesting films, concerts, football matches. But some people think that it's bad to watch TV. Those who watch TV need do nothing. We are passive when we watch TV. Television shows us many interesting programmes. But again there is a disadvantage here: we watch TV every evening, and it begins to dominate our lives.
My friend told me that when his TV-set broke down, he and his family found that they had more time to do things and to talk to each other. There are other arguments for and against television.
Very often the programmes are bad. Sometimes they show too much violence in films and news programmes. There is also too much pop music and ads. Ads on the whole are convenient for grown-ups. But is it good for children to watch all those ads where they show all kinds of underwear and what not?
