Since the number of consonants in the world's languages is marginally greater than the number of consonant letters in any one alphabet, linguists have devised systems such as the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to assign a unique symbol to each attested consonant. In fact, the Latin alphabet, which is used to write English, has fewer consonant letters than English has consonant sounds, so digraphs like "ch", "sh", "th", and "zh" are used to extend the alphabet, and some letters and digraphs represent more than one consonant. For example, the sound spelled "th" in "this" is a different consonant than the "th" sound in "thin". (In the IPA they are transcribed [ð] and [θ], respectively.)

Piot Skarga urodził się w 1536 roku w Grójcu, miejscowości położonej w pobliżu Warszawy. Pochodził z rodziny szlacheckiej, posługującej się nazwiskiem Powęski. W latach 1552-1555 studiował w Akademii Krakowskiej, gdzie uzyskał stopień bakałarza. Po zakończeniu studiów objął kierownictwo szkoły parafialnej przy kościele św. Jana w Warszawie. Najprawdopodobniej w roku 1564 przyjął święcenia kapłańskie, po czym został kanclerzem kapituły we Lwowie, gdzie dał się poznać jako żarliwy kaznodzieja, zwalczający innowierstwo.

It has been only a year since Russian Federation after 18 years of negotiation finally accessed WTO, and since then it has managed to make headlines over imposed protectionism barriers. Such behaviour is not surprising considering that Russian industries remain to be in the poor state and performance. The state remains to choose an export-led growth strategy. Aware that the presidential plan omitted any provision for social or economic reconstruction, the Radical Republicans in Congress resented such a lenient political arrangement under solely executive jurisdiction. As a result, the stricter Wade-Davis Bill was passed in 1864 but pocket vetoed by the President.

This is not the first time when I have read the work by Richard Gordon and this story made me interest in his work. Richard Gordon was born in 1921. Richard Gordon is the pen name used by Gordon Ostlere, an English surgeon and anaesthetist. As Richard Gordon, Ostlere has written numerous novels, screenplays for film and television and accounts of popular history, mostly dealing with the practice of medicine. He is most famous for a long series of comic novels on a medical theme starting with Doctor in the House. Gordon worked as anaesthetist at St. Bartholomew's Hospital (where he was a medical student) and later as a ship's surgeon and as assistant editor of the British Medical Journal. In 1952, he left medical practice and took up writing full time.
